China becomes the world's largest industrial manufacturer, and has won the "incumbent's advantage" in the international market competition. However, undeniably, there still exist some problems. The great pressure of exchange rates, resource cost and environment forces China's manufacturing to upgrade and improve the large but not strong status. This dissertation abandons the closed perspective in the traditional literature on the manufacturing competitiveness which analyzes the upgrading ways from manufacturing itself. Instead, the dissertation adopts an open perspective to study the function mechanism of producer services on the manufacturing, offers a new clue to promote the development of manufacturing in response to the trend of "economic softening" and "servitization of manufacturing"The dissertation defines producer services as the set of service providers in and outside the producer which satisfies the intermediate service demand in the production process of tangible and intangible products. Based on the value chain theory, internationalization theory and innovation theory, the dissertation puts forward the function mechanism of producer services on the manufacturing's value-creating process and internationalization and knowledge innovation. The dissertation discusses the mechnism of the externalization and internalization of producer services on the manufacturing and standards to select between the two modes. The existing researches on the impact of producer services on manufacturing consider the externalization as the function channel regardless of the role of producer service provided by manufacturing. This dissertation dynamically studies the function mechanism of producer services on the development of manufacturing by combining the internalization and externalization of producer services as two modes into an integrated research framework, and study the positive and negative function mechanism of these two modes on the development of manufacturing. The dissertation investigates the co-evolution of the two modes constructing an optimum circulation to promote the upgrading of manufacturing and producer services result in the optimization of economic structure. The dissertation also proposes standards for manufacturing enterprises'managers as how to select the adequate function mode of producer services to make good use of producer service in the daily operation, such as strategic importance, asset appropriation, demand, external and internal production efficiency.Input-output analysis and econometric analysis in the dissertation support the simulative effect of producer services on the development of manufacturing in China. Existing empirical studies focus on analyzing the impact of outside producer services on the development of manufacturing without analyzing the impact of producer services provided by manufacturing on the development of manufacturing, analyzing from the industry level without empirical inspection using enterprise data. The dissertation constructs econometric models respectively based on cross-section data and panel data from the World Bank's survey of China and related statistical yearbooks. The estimation results show that both the externalization and internalization of producer services promote the improvement of manufacturing's labor productivity significantly. And the impact of the producer services in and outside the manufacturing on the labor productivity of technology-intensive manufacturing is significantly positive, while the impact on the labor productivity of labor-intensive manufacturing and capital-intensive manufacturing is not very obvious. External traditional producer services (for example, wholesale and retail services, transportation, storage and postal services, financial services) and knowledge producer services (for example, information transmission and computer services and software services, leasing and business services, scientific research and comprehensive technical services) are great driving force pushing the improvement of the labor productivity of manufacturing, especially the improvement of the labor productivity of technology-intensive manufacturing. What's more, the impact of external traditional producer services is greater than knowledge producer services. The empirical result means that it's necessary for labor-intensive manufacturing and capital-intensive manufacturing to consume more and better producer services so as to improve the labor productivity. The significant effect of producer services on the technology-intensive manufacturing implies the adequate use of producer services is helpful to promote the development of high-tech manufacturing and optimize the internal structure of manufacturing.
