The accelerating urbanization has created a variety of concomitant problems whichmade the space network---footstone for a city s functioning---a crucial research object. This dissertation is based on a core achievement of the space syntax studies which isthe multilevel network structure of a city s space, themed by forms and functions, proposes a quantitative analyzing method to multilevel and multivariate space networkstructures. Tianjin city was selected to be the analyzing object to empirically study onthe evolution of a city s space and practically reveal the effects of planning and designon a city s development, so that it can explore the approaches to optimizing the courseof planning and design. The cognition of the space network structures features shouldbe merged with the planning and design in favor of a city s functioning anddevelopment. Therefore, this dissertation will be weaved around four stages---theconstruction of theories, the empirical study of the space network structures evolution, the argument and optimization of the planning and design, the planning and designaided by the cognition of the network structures. The chapter2-3which are on the construction of theories render the theory on thecity space analysis and the theory on the city space planning and controlling coherent, revealing the characteristics such as theme evolution and complexity in the study of acity space. After the theoretical advantages and methodological features of space syntaxare completely stated, these two chapters demonstrate the correlation between the spacenetwork topological structure and a city s functions, and then conclude some newresearching patterns and ideas of space structure for it.In chapter4, Tianjin city was selected to be the analyzing object. Using aquantitative analyzing method to multilevel and multivariate space network structures, itobjectively unveils the city space s characters of centrality, network and its syntheticmodels at micro, medium as well as macro level over different historical periods.Combining the evolution of space network structures with the events related to the city sdevelopment and construction, and then focusing on the correlation between spacestructure and the city s functions, on the effects of planned construction andspontaneous construction on space network structure, it deduces the followingconclusions: a) a city s functions, to a large extent, depends on the space topologicalstructure of the city; b) the planned construction where geometry is used to strengthen a city s special order only works at macro-level; c) the space structure formed byspontaneous construction or coordination apparently has advantages and betterstructural flexibility at micro and medium levels. These statements above clarify theflaws of planned construction and the approaches to modification. In the part concerning the argument and optimization of the planning and design(chapter5), it conducts, on the basis of the historical studies, empirical argumentsaround three essential problems which in the new period the space network structure isfacing, explore some feasible methods where the analysis of the space networktopological structure was introduced in planning and design: a) arguments onestablishing new network structure in the existing city space, discussion about the issuethat the new model requires taping the special potential taking the plan and design ofs main and vice urban zone as the example; b) the arguments on theprotection of the existing city space during upgrading the old network structure, it takesthe Taian avenue in Tianjin city as the instance to discuss how to continue the previousspecial culture within the upgrade; c) taking the subway network under construction inTianjin as the example, it contemplates the feasibility of blending new elements in theexisting urban zone and how to achieve structural optimization with the new elements. The fourth stage--chapter6---the planning and design aided by thecognition of the network structures points out the requirement for merging thecognition of space network structure with the course of planning and design and theways to accomplishing the requirement after rethinking about the limitation of thoseroutine planning and design procedures. Through these considerations, it expects toproduce some more scientific strategies of planning and design to enhance citiesfunctioning.
