| The paper mainly studies the relationship between Guangzhou ancient urban canalsystem and city development. Guangzhou ancient city is located at the confluence of thewest,north,east rivers of the Pearl River canal system. In history,rivers cross rivers andchannels cross channels, which forms a giant network. The changes of city developmentare related to the development canal system’s evolution. Urban water environment plays animportant role in urban site selection and urban origin. Ren Xiao city in Qin Dynasty, thecapital of South Yue to the Bu Zhi town in Sanguo,Guangzhou city of the Sui and TangDynasties, then to the Five Generation, the Song and Yuan Dynasties until the GuangzhouCity of Ming and Qing Dynasties. Canal system plays a decisive role in site selection, thespatial layout, traffic and economic development, urban water conservancy and militarydefense.This paper is based on the deeply learning about historical documents and locatedarchaeological research. It clarifies what effects has Guangzhou ancient urban canal systemhad on the formation,development and evolution of the city from the Qin Dynasty to the lateQing Dynasty. Then,from urban traffic,economic development,living and production,urban disaster prevention, transformation of the urban environment, military defense andother aspects, it illuminates its functions: the Pearl River, river, pond lakes andunderground water drainage system in Guangzhou altogether constitute a relatively perfectcanal system, which not only meets the demand of city’s production,living water and floodpreventl, drainage and so on, but also provides a good ecological environment forGuangzhou.The thesis is mainly divided into three parts.Part one: the first chapter is introduction. It introduces the research background andsignificance, defines the research object and related concepts, and reviews urban historicalgeography at home and abroad,historical canal system,urban historical research status andresearch level of Guangzhou. It puts forward corresponding research methods, and pointsout the exploration and research framework.Part two: including the second chapter to the fifth chapter. It mainly studies therelationship between Guangzhou ancient urban canal system and urban location, urban formand urban pattern,urban traffic and economic development,water conservancy and the city of military defense.Part three: the sixth chapter. It theoretically summarizes the relationship betweenGuangzhou ancient urban canal system and urban development, and illuminates thehistorical and realistic significance of Guangzhou ancient urban canal system’s development. |
