Since China’s reform and opening up to the outside world, Chinese Craze has been increasingly heating-up throughout the world with the rapid development of China’s economy. There has been a surge in the number of people learning Chinese and the Confucius Institution worldwide. At present, however, the quality and efficiency of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language are far from satisfying the need of the current situation. How can we make Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and the students’learning more effective? This is a problem remains to be resolved. The theory of effective teaching has just started to be applied to Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, though it has been studied for decades in the realm of pedagogy. Therefore, the author of the thesis has chosen this topic to examine and reflect the effectiveness of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, raising proposals to improve teaching featuring low-effectiveness or zero-effectiveness, in the hope of promoting Chinese across the world, utilizing teaching effectiveness and efficiency in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. The thesis is composed of seven parts: 1) Introduction, which mainly introduces the research in terms of background, academic value, application value, research steps, methodology and theories of effective teaching. Meanwhile, the defination, characteristics, standards, principles, strategies, previous research, present problems and development trend of effective teaching and factors affecting it are presented; 2) The foundational principles of effective teaching. With the introduction of the characteristics of effective teaching, the second part discusses many factors related to effective teaching, such as the concept, features, standards, factors and strategy of influence, development trend, etc.; 3) Effective teaching in the perspective of students. A questionnaire has been conducted and analyzed to understand what kinds of teaching is regarded as effective by students; 4) Examination of practice and case study of effective teaching in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. Some common problems in classroom teaching have been pointed out; 5) Analysis of factors affecting effective teaching, including those of teachers, students and learning environment; 6) Strategies in effective teaching in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. It proposes to improve teaching featuring low-effectiveness or zero-effectiveness, including preparation, teaching language, blackboard design, use of multi-media, questions-raising, classroom management, effective Chinese element teaching, effective training of single language skill, effective text explanation and explanation of exercises. This part is of vital importance of the whole thesis in that it deals with problems to the point and it is also practically viable; 7) The conclusion. It offers conclusion and raises expectations for effective teaching in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language.
