Questing For Universality

The development of metaphysics in Wei and Jin is centre on several core concepts such as "You and Wu""Ben and Mo""Nature and Norms", questing for "Wu" and natural law showed the importance of universality and unity. On the questing for universality, metaphysics of philosophers showed different theory characteristic. Wang Bi had been questing for universality, but trying to avoid separate of universal principle and concrete things, that’s showed his theory characteristic is "Chong Ben Ju Mo".In theory, point of universal principle can put variety of objects in unified whole. Based on reality, failed social norm need universal principle to lead reconstruct authoritativeness. With regard to ultimate causes of the world existence, Wang Bi came up with new idea "Yi Wu Wei Ben"."Wu" eliminate all specific property, so "Wu" governs all things. The law of "Wu" is content himself of nature, all things should obeyed natural law, and social norm are no exception. Based on natural law, social norm got rationality again, and theory developing is possible. With the development of natural law, failed social norm got unified framework of interpretation.But any universal principle separate from real world is abstract, it can’t reveal the truth of real world. Wang Bi trying to avoid make universal principle into abstraction, Wang Bi thinks that "Wu" must showed itself in the concrete "You", knows of "Wu" must based on concrete "You"."You" is "Mo", but it is realistic basis of "Wu". Social norm got rationality based on natural law, it means Wang Bi not placed his ideal in opposition to real world, the ideal natural world is not separate from real world. Wang Bi build his universal principle on the realistic basis, and lay emphasis on the unity of universal principle and concrete things, it makes his thinking have more theory vitality.The theory characteristic of Wang Bi’s thinking is "Chong Ben Ju Mo", it also unfold in the debate of "Xing and Qing" and "Yan and Yi". On the debate "Xing and Qing", Wang Bi first claimed "Xing Qi Qing", he considered that human can’t let his emotion lose its own way, it needs universal human nature to control of mutability emotion. And Wang Bi also claimed "Sheng Ren You Qing", he considered that human can not to suppress his rational emotion, based on the control of universal human nature, human’s emotion is indispensable, universal human nature should unfold in the multiple emotion. On the debate of "Yan and Yi", Wang Bi first claimed "De Xiang Wang Yan, De Yi Wang Xiang", he considered that the questing for world can not limit to word and language, word and language just the way to the object, it can not replace the real target. And Wang Bi also claimed "Jin Yi Mo Ruo Xiang, Jin Xiang Mo Ruo Yan", he considered that as the way to the object, word and language also have great use to human knows, transcend word and language is based on word and language.Analysis based on the development of metaphysics in Wei and Jin, makes the theory characteristic of Wang Bi’s metaphysics more clearly. He Yan takes "Wu Suo You" as the ultimate causes of the world existence, but can’t solve the unity problem of "Wu Suo You" and "You Suo You", and take a one-sided approach to the universal principle. Succeed by He Yan’s questing for "Wu", Wang Bi also trying to achieve the unity of "Wu" and "You", and makes his theory more rational. But Guo Xiang denied "Wu" as the ultimate causes of the world existence, he considered that the ultimate causes of things is its own individuality, it makes his theory have individualist orientation. In the meantime, in the questing for natural law by He Yan Wang Bi and Guo Xiang, they all recognize the necessity of social norm, and show the prevailing view of the metaphysics in Wei and Jin. By comparison, in the questing for natural law, Ji Kang claimed "Yue Ming Jiao Er Ren Zi Ran", showed strong to the real world, and not tolerate by the society finally. Overall, the theory characteristic Wang Bi’s questing for universal principle is "Chong Ben Ju Mo", he trying to get concrete form universal principle, and ask for communication between universal principle and concrete things. Although his theory has some weak point, he got great theory achievement, shows his own theoretical approaches.
