Large scale migration of rural surplus labor into the cities or non-farming occupations is an inevitable outcome of industrialization and urbanization."Migrant laborers" are a special social group appearing during the special social and system transition period. Two processes are involved in the inflow of migrant workers into the cities-the outward transfer of laborers from their hometowns or the occupational transition of peasant laborers to migrant laborers and the settlement in the cities or the identity transition of migrant laborers to citizens. However, the binary residence registry system-the barrier leading to the rural-urban separation has to be demolished before migrant workers realize their transition to citizens. Despite that the migrant workers have surged into the cities through "dominant ID wall"in raging torrents, they still have to face a series of problems, which prevent them from wrenching themselves away from the bonds of their original identities. As a consequence, they are still roamers in between the boundaries of cities and countryside. On the basis of an exhaustive review and scrutiny of the current research literature on the migrant workers behavior choice, and through the sampling investigation of the quantity of migrant workers in Jiangsu Province and their essential characteristics of their behavior choice, the dissertation attempts to analyze the influencing factors on their behavior choice, and to deal with the mechanism of their behavior choice making, and thereby, offers an objective analysis of the effect of migrant workers’behavior choice on the social economy. The behavior choice trend is induced through the analysis on their behavior choice willingness. Finally, on the basis of study the suggestions and counter-measures are offered. In this project, sampling survey was conducted with the yield of960migrant workers questionnaires collected and the effective samples of894harvested. The following significant conclusions are jumped at:1. In the choice of the working sites, the migrant workers of Jiangsu tend to focus more on the pay of flowing employment than on the cost. In the choice of willingness, there exists little difference between the first generation and the second generation of migrant workers in terms of hanging on in the cities, at least as far as statistics as concerned. But when the factor of length of service in the city is taken into consideration, a stronger willingness of staying in the city is manifested among the second generation with longer service.2. In the choice of their off-spring education behaviors, it is found that (1) financial factor is firstly considered in their decision on whether to bring their children to city schools, in other words, sufficient income is needed to support their children’s schooling in the city;(2) they have no choice but to bring their children with them to the city when the couple are both migrant workers and have no relatives at their home village to look after their children;(3) the higher education background the migrant workers have, the more willingly they will let their children enjoy the quality education in the cities;(4) school fee and other educational cost negatively affect their choice, with higher admission standard of public schools negatively influencing their choice;(5)their choice is obviously affected by their appraisal of the social environment of the city they work in, if it is favorable, they are willing to share the environment with their children;(6) the absence of equal right to education in theoretical sense is imposed on the off-springs of the migrant workers as a consequence of "social screening" and the resultant group expulsion, discrimination and prejudices. Moreover, more than half of those who have school-age children at home village are planning to bring them into the city schools in three years to come.3. In the choice of skill training behaviors, migrant workers conform to the basic assumption of "rational economic man", that is to say, they pursue the maximum training effect and the skill training has a positive effect on their income. However, skill training does not produce any obvious effect on the migrant workers social role transformation. Its effect on the migrant workers’ occupational transformation is stronger than its effect on their social role transformation. Recent years have witnessed enhanced willingness of investing in skill training, which results from many compound factors. The dissertation is divided into five parts:Part One includes Chapter One, preface. It deals with the research background, purpose and significance, literature review, research goal and content, research method and technical scheme, possible innovation and shortcomings, etc. Part Two consists of Chapter Two and Chapter Three. It addresses the theoretical foundation for migrant workers’choice of behaviors, the history of migrant workers and the status-quo and living standard of migrant workers.Part Three comprises Chapter Four. It treats the scaffolds for analysis, the method of analysis, survey plan and sample description statistical analysis.Part Four is made up of Chapter Five, Chapter Six, and Chapter Seven. It tackles the site selection on the part of migrant workers and its social-economic effect analysis, their off-spring education choice, skill training choice and its social-economic effect analysis. Part Five contains Chapter Eight, which is concerned with the conclusion and suggestions and counter-measures.
