With the advances in modern technology and social development, especially in thedissemination of technical and visual technology advances, more and more visual form andexperience continue to emerge. Chinese society has begun to enter the "Reading Pictures era"with powerful visual image strength, and the virtual digital world brings a new perception tothe real world of human beings; human survival environment has undergone fundamentalchanges. The world is no longer a society based on the logic of written language, but is avisual culture-driven society including ubiquitous visual elements. Our society and culture arevisualizing in varied degrees, and this change of visualization affects our understanding of theworld and experience.Visual era makes visual thinking become an important way for modern people to graspthe world, visual thinking and intuitive thinking about the image has become a key skill. Thecrowds in contemporary society receive massive message, on the other hand, the degree ofvisual information is increasingly higher, both of which urgently demand the audience’shigher visual literacy. Students in Art Design are shouldering the dual mission of receivingand manufacturing images, so the training of visual literacy is particularly important.Reading Pictures Era brings change of traditional education in silence, but it has becomean integral and important impact factor in the teaching and teaching process. How to responsethe education and teaching in Reading Pictures Era? Even though the researchers in the fieldof educational technology pay more attention on this problem; but the valuable and influentialresearch work seldom issue, especially for Art Design major in higher education, theintegration about the visual literacy education and traditional curriculums has become apressing problem.The main contribution of this paper includes:1. Clarifying the system of contents about visual literacy training for the students majorin Art Design through the analysis of visual literacy.2. Formulating the visual literacy standards for the students major in Art Design.3. Constructing the hybrid teaching mode to promote visual literacy training based on thetheoretical research.4. The implementation plan and effective strategies of the curriculum design based onvisual literacy training programs.Chapter Ⅰ Introduction: This section mainly discusses the background, main problem,research value, research ideas and methods of the thesis, and elaborates the technical basis,historical background and social causes for the emerge of Reading Pictures Era.Chapter Ⅱ Literature Review: The visual literacy education originated in the westerncountries, and has accumulated a large amount of literature in theoretical research andpractice methods after decades of development. Although the visual literacy education inChina started late, but researchers paid more attention on its study in recent years, and some renowned insightful results provide a reference for the thesis. This chapter mainly discussesthe interpretation and diverse understanding of visualization and visual literacy in essence,and summaries the visual literacy teaching or training at home and abroad. Through theresearch and analysis on media literacy and information literacy, this chapter is to clarify therelationship between visual literacy, media literacy and information literacy, and thendetermines the main problems for this research work.Chapter Ⅲ The meaning and construction of visual literacy for Art Design major:Through the analysis about the definitions and meanings of visual literacy at home and abroad,this chapter presents the definition and meaning visual literacy for Art Design major, andanalyzes the constituent elements of visual literacy for Art Design major. Based on thedefinitions of visual literacy at home and abroad, this thesis puts forward the definition of thevisual literacy for Art Design major.Chapter Ⅳ The relationship between visual learning and visual literacy for Art Designmajor: This chapter analyzes the features of visual literacy and the characteristics of thestudents’ professional learning, and determines the relationship between professional learningand visual literacy. For the students major in Art Design, the empirical research shows thatthe level of visual literacy and the results of professional learning has a direct relationship,namely the students who gain high level of visual literacy have excellent scores; and thelower level with the poor professional learning results. Thus the level of visual literacy have adirect impact on the professional learning for the students major in Art Design, and the visualliteracy training is necessary for the students major in Art Design.Chapterⅴ The standards of visual literacy for Art Design major: According to thecontents of visual literacy meaning for Art Design major, this chapter determines the visualliteracy standards.Chapterⅵ The measurement and analysis of the visual literacy for Art Design major:The design of questionnaire is based on the measurement standards for Art Design major (thisquestionnaire is an amendment to the previous forecast questionnaire), and we select studentsfrom four classes major in Art Design to test their visual literacy. This chapter also analyzesthe reliability and validity of the questionnaire, and analyzes the description property and thedifference property for the current status of visual literacy.Chapterⅶ The construction of hybrid teaching mode to promote visual literacy training:Based on the theories of blended learning, educational technology and course of deep-levelintegration and constructivist, this chapter constructs hybrid teaching mode for Art Designwhich can promote visual literacy training with technical support.Chapter ⅷ Measurement and analysis after the implementation of the practical teachingof visual literacy. Case teaching in hybrid teaching mode is practiced; the measurement andthe results analysis are given before and after implementation of the practice teaching visualliteracy for the experimental class. At the same time we give the comparative studies of thecontrast class in traditional teaching mode, and obtain the experimental findings: hybridteaching mode with technical support holds a significant effect on the improvement of visualliteracy for the students major in Art Design. At the end of the thesis, the conclusions and reflection of visual literacy training for thestudents major in Art Design are given, and then deep thinking and perspective fordiscipline-institutionalized research are presented.
