Independent innovation is the impetus of regional economic and social sustainable development. The promotion of regional innovation is not only the foundation to improve national innovation, but also an important way to construct regional innovation system and guide economic and social development. The speed up of independent innovation will contribute to the formation of an internal force for regional economic growth. Now the development of central China is in a critical stage. Researches on how to promote independent innovation in central China is an important guarantee to realize the strategy of rise of central China and also an effective way to build an innovative country.Many researches prove that regional independent innovation is an innovative regional pattern suitable for regional needs through a continuous interaction between the regional innovation subject and environment; it is a dynamic process continuously adapting to regional economic and social objectives. Based on researches on path dependence theory, this thesis discusses the independent innovation in central China. Through an evaluation of independent innovation in this region, this thesis aims to discover the features of path dependence of independent innovation in central China and then looks for a way to break path dependence. Content of the thesis can be divided into three parts:Part One is the theoretical basis:through the literature review, this part introduces related theories on path dependence and independent innovation and state the history and development of researches on path dependence of independent innovation. After that, it analyzes the influence of path dependence on regional innovation, discuss the reasons of path dependence in the process of regional economic development, and then summarize the main manifestations of regional innovation; a review of the evolution of path dependence of regional innovation in China since its establishment is included in this thesis, which is divided into four stages in the regional innovation system:foundation stage, start-up stage, development stage and maturity stage. With the help of historical materials and data this part also analyzes the primary events and development features of each stage.Part Two is the core part of this paper:firstly, based on the mechanism deficiencies during regional innovation and the real situation in central China, an evaluation index system of regional innovation in central China is constructed from four aspects:innovation input, innovation output, innovation environment, and sustainable development. Then an evaluation research on the independent innovation of provinces in central China from2007to2009is carried out. Combining with the evaluation results, this part analyze the independent innovation in these provinces and find out the advantages and disadvantages of the development of independent innovation there; then the formation and evolution of path dependence in central China is analyzed. Combining with data of the six provinces in central China from2000to2009, taking Hefei-Wuhu-Bangbu reform pilot area as the example, the evolution of path dependence during regional innovation is analyzed. It explores new possibility of independent innovation through a "barbell-shaped" innovation development pattern in central China which centers in Wuhan Urban Circle and Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan urban agglomeration, and further suggests some ways to improve independent innovation in central China are proposed from the following facets:perfection of coordinated development policies in central China, enlargement of research and development investment, implementation of a combination strategy of production, study and research, reasonable industrial transfer in international and eastern regions.Part Three is the suggestion and conclusion part:Aiming at the features of independent innovation in central regions, some policy suggestions are given from innovation support, innovation impetus, innovation methods and innovation markets, Based on the features of two reform pilot areas of Wuhan Urban Circle and Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan urban agglomeration, a policy suggestion is offered so as to provide some policy suggestions oriented from innovation technology. Finally, there comes the conclusion and prospect.The theoretical analysis part of this paper consummates the theories about path dependence-based regional independent innovation ability. After generalizing theoretical researches on independent innovation from classic theories and academic frontiers, especially the combination of regional innovation development in central China with the path dependence theory, it argues the reasons resulting in path dependence of regional innovation, discusses the reinforcement and locking function of path dependence on independent innovation and believes that path in order to get rid of the predicament of path dependent, it is necessary to break the path on which regional innovation depends and move from path dependence to path creation.A detailed analysis of the innovation situation in reach provinces in central China is performed. In conjunction with the data, the path dependence of independent innovation evolvement in each province is analyzed as well. This paper also presents Wuhan Urban Circle and Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan urban agglomeration as two cores for independent innovation development in central China, and constructs a barbell-type way for improvement of independent innovation in central China. Besides, this paper also combines with specific cases to propose some policy suggestions targeting at the factors restricting the improvement of independent innovation in central China.
