The Preservance And Breakthrough In Chinese University Culture Construction

As the soul of the university, university culture is the value idea, behaviour norm and mode of practice which were produced by persons in univeristy in a long time. There are three aspects of the university culture: spiritual culture, system culture and material culture. Our traditional university culture has some characteristics such as attaching importance to social standard, to ethical humanism, to the political mission of saving nation, to the debate between "Tao" and "Qi". Meanwhile, western univeristy culture still preserve some excellent tradition, such as the self-governing of univerity, academic freedom, advocating liberal education as well as the combination of scientific and humanism spirits, etc. These common excellent tradition should be preserved in the construction of our university culture, but we should have some breakthrough when we preserve excellent parts of national and western univerity culture. At present, we have some achievements in university culture construction, but we also have manny problems, such as the declination of spirit of unverity, the deviation of value orientation, too much influence of market economy. We should preserve the excellent parts of national and western university culture, identify and tranform those parts that are not appropriate to this age, create new university culture idea, construct better university instituion, reinforce construction of material culture, therefore construct new university culture which is approriate for China in this age.
