From the value point of view, the modern western design has a typical two element. On the one hand, it is a product of western industrial civilization and the birth of the consumer society together, can win the profit in the product design, which makes it with the utilitarian color; on the other hand, it also carries the Enlightenment from the lofty "gene", for equality, democracy and the realization of value of perseverance, commitment to serve the society, showing deep concern for the human condition, and it is the transcendence of. It is precisely because of the existence of this contradiction that western design in the course of its development, always through the self reflection and criticism of temperament. Because of this, so criticism is almost always accompanied by design and the existence of relationship between the two is concomita nt, mainly reflected in the multiple dimensions of technology, aesthetic, social and ecological. They were launched, with the logical order of priority. The expansion of critical dimension also shows the change of western social values, which shows the complexity and dynamics of the ethical issues behind the design. Because of this, the design of the future development will inevitably return to the whole, it will also make people, society and nature together again.This thesis includes three parts: introduction, text and conclusion. In the introduction, the research significance and the research status are summarized, and the related literatures are sorted out.The text has 6 chapters. The first chapter is the design criticism history traced back to ancient Greek civilization as a starting point, in the era of industrial civilization design culture, material culture is important to sort out, showing a prototype design criticism from. Second, 3, 4, 5 chapter is based on four dimensions of technology, aesthetics, society and ecology as a starting point, the design of the industrial revolution criticism development in-depth analysis, combined with the process of social history, will be the key to the question presented one by one. The sixth chapter is the design for the main criticism of the problem into consideration, elaborated under different participation, design criticism has shown rich and diverse characteristics. Under these four dimensions, a number of key ethical issues will be presented one by one, whic h reflects the diversity and contradiction of the development of Western design.The conclusion is a summary of the full text. The thesis holds that the development of modern design has made great progress on the one hand, but at the same time, it is also faced with severe ethical dilemma. It is in this context, the design criticism highlights the necessity and the significance of its existence, therefore it is gradually from a critic circle belongs to the humanistic thinking activities, gradually become an important way for mass of self interests reasonable expression, and gradually become a common consciousness.
