This research is based on the growing "research vs teaching" debate in China's higher education.The historical research,theoretical research,trend study and comparative research on Scholarship of Teaching and Learning are done in this study.MOOCs(Massive Open Online Courses)is critical driving force for the future of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning."Scholarship of Teaching" is proposed by Ernest L.Boyer who was the president of the Carnegie Foundation for Advancement of Teaching in 1990.It grew into a worldwide the "Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Movement" rapidly.Led and Pushed by the Carnegie Foundation for Advancement of Teaching,more and more universities and teachers participated in this movement.It is still growing during 25 years development.This study uses methodology of "History and logic one and the same" based on literature study on scholarship of teaching field.Three levels and two phrases in development of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Movement was summarized in this study.The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Movement and research on scholarship of teaching and learning developed in three levels.First one is strategic study and related theoretical study.The second one is teaching and learning research in classroom conducted by teachers.Third one is policy research on management and evaluation in universities.These three levels are tied closely in teaching and learning innovation practice in higher education.The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Movement has experienced two phrases in lase twenty five years.The first one is national strategic policy study,and the new thinking about evaluation system led by Boyer.The second phrase showed mainly that the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Movement got into the campus and disciplines led and pushed by Lee,S.Shulman,who is Boyer 's successor in Carnegie Foundation for Advancement of Teaching.Amounts of classroom study on students learning conducted,and brought changes in campus' policy for evaluation system,professional development and learning assessment.Chapter 2 and 3 of this dissertation conducts systematic introduction and deep interpretation on Boyer and Shulman's theory and practice in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.Further,three issues in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Movement Based on the study of history and current situation of this movement was proposed.First one is that top research universities did not show much interest as other type of universities for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.The second one is that it needs new way of publication to represent all the information in teaching.The third one is that it needs to figure out the better methods and approach for teaching evaluation.These three issues must be serious treated as an uphill battle.The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Movement is getting into the third phrase with the trends of MOOCs.The educational engineering is coming:Teaching is becoming the complex system engineering by teamwork in information age,and the academic value of organization,management,operation and study of this kind of teaching is as good as any scientific research project.Actually it is the inter-disciplinary frontier academic field.How to face the three issues within MOOCs trends?How could the scholarship of teaching and learning show a value direction for MOOCs which is full of multiple value conflict?How could the scholarship of teaching and learning lead the way of teaching and learning innovation in higher education in information age?All these questions are analyzed in this study.The unique understanding and interpretation of "Scholarship of Teaching and Learning" is proposed in this study based on research on western and China's notion of scholarship and teaching,especially the research conducted by Boyer and Shulman.Scholarship of Teaching and Learning represents generalized scholarship and generalized teaching,and highlights the position and value of teaching in multiple academic environments in universities and colleges.The traditional educational model-"small-scale peasant economy" teaching model and "industrial assembly line"student training model should be changed in information age.The creativity of teachers and students should be motivated to have the teaching and learning innovation become the shared pursuits and goals in universities and colleges,which are the "communities of scholars" and these communities include students and teachers that see students as young scholars.This is healthy culture in universities,and also is the academic way to treat the "research vs teaching" debate.Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is of great significance for China's higher education.The concept of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning was introduced into China as soon as Boyer's proposition of this new concept,and teachers,leader in universities and researchers of higher education are not strange to this concept.But the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Movement did not happen in China.The reason for the big gap of development of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Movement between China and the United States of America was analyzed in this study according to comparative study.The main goal of China's higher education was building more universities to fulfill the growing needs for higher education and have a few universities get into the class of top universities in the world in twenty five years ago,so Boyer's Scholarship of Teaching and Learning did not match the need of China that time.But after twenty five years rapid growth,the "research vs teaching debate" is becoming increasingly fierce.In this background,the theory and practice of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is just at the right time.MOOCs is becoming a strong driving force for teaching and learning innovation in higher learning.China and the West are in the same start line in this new time and space created by MOOCs,and this is the great opportunity for China's development of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Movement.Have teaching become the serious intellectual work should be the shared goals for teachers,leaders in universities and colleges and researchers of higher education.
