Study On The Origin, Development And Existing Cases Of ?Megastructure‘ Under The Domain Of Architecture In Western Countries From The End Of 1950’s To The Mid Of 1970’s

The object of this thesis,the theory of mega-structure,is a branch of the cultural theory in the field of western architecture in the middle of 20 th century.It is also a historical product of the megastructure movment as a branch of late movement of modernism.In particular,buildings and infrastructures of which the structural service life of varies at different levels are characterized by massive,extensible and hierarchical frameworks.First of all,the author tries to start from the perspective of architectural history and trace the origin of the megastructure based on the research that has been formed at home and abroad at the present stage.Subsequently,the author will restore the entire history of the megastructure movement and examine the occurrence,development,and annihilation of the megastructure theory by examining the major issues that the megastructure theory deals with at different stages.At the same time,in historical traditions where the megastructure is not long,if one attempts to examine existing modern building cases before the start of the movement with the existing megastructure concept criteria,one can establish a developmental relationship between these cases and the megastructure cases.But it is better to find out the history of the megastructure theoretic model and the start of the megastructure movement rather than being able to find a source of germination for the megastructure.Compared to those cases where the modernism rises early,those constructed from steel and glass since the 19 th century,as well as the more distant medieval bridges and even the indigenous civilization sites of North American aborigines,are more suitable to be considered as the origin of the megastructure.By expanding the horizon of historical investigation,the author tries to find a possible germination and gradually forming clues for the megastructure,and to demonstrate the significance and internal connection of the megastructure to modern architecture.In addition,during studying in the UK,the author selected three local construction examples that were built in the megastructure movement and get preserved,using case analysis as a concrete method to examine them.In addition,the author tries to get rid of the limitations of research behaviors such as the identities of juxtapositions in the case of a specific case in a relatively narrow context,and instead focuses on historical evolution and design itself.By combing the historical process of the development of theoretical development with the megastructure movement,and the different conditions and reasons behind the three buildings in the present,the meaning of the contemporary architecture and the process of urbanization are taken into consideration in the context of contemporary society.The background of the text completes the renewal of the cognition of the megastructure.As a striking transitional episode between the late modernism and postmodernism,for a long time,the theory of megastructure was firmly labeled as "radical" and "absurd" in the study of architectural history and theory,but its historical value gradually gained people’s recognition in later time.The author summarizes the origin of megastructure theory,the historical process of megastructure movement,the types of megastructure theoretical models.In addition,by analyzing the success and failure of three completed cases of megastructure,the author explores the original intention of the megastructure movement in the context of modern architecture history and its qualities of using for reference on contemporary urbanization.To expound the meaning and value of the mega-structure in modern architecture from the perspective of "lost property of modernism" is also a research purpose of this dissertation.In summary,the main innovations of this dissertation are as follows: 1.The author proposed "the megastructure of artificial landscape","the megastructure of technology supremacy" and "the megastructure of ideology" as the revision on the existing type system of megastructure theoretical model.Besides,the author updated the concept of megastructure from a contemporary perspective;2.The author filled the current domestic research and cognitive gaps in the "original" perspective on megastructure by achieving a development process on precedent and formation of megastructure since the ancient to modernist period.3.On the basis of the existing research achievements,the author has combed the historical process of the entire megastructure movement by expanding the research scope of investigation in the Chinese context for the first time;4.The author updated the cognition of megastructure in contemporary context by examining and analyzing three existing megastructure cases.
