Construction industry and construction methods are changing because of resource constraints, demographic dividends and environmental pollution.Prefabricated buildings become a hot issue in the whole world as the green building. However, its market share was only 13.9% until 2018 years.High construction cost is the crucial factor hindering the development of prefabricated buildings, while standardization and economies of scale are the keys to reducing the construction cost of prefabricated buildings. This study aims to explore a stakeholder collaboration mechanism, which helps to reduce the construction cost through achieving standardization and economies of scale. To fill this research gap, four objectives were achieved considering Synergistic Theory and Complex System Theory. Objective 1 focuses on exploring the formation of stakeholder collaboration because of construction cost, aiming to explore the aspects of stakeholder collaboration mechanism.Guided by Synergistic Theory and Complex System Theory, this study explores the driving factors, conditions, paths and evolution mechanism of the formation of stakeholder collaboration using semi-structured interview, questionnaire and simulation. The findings suggested construction cost saving is the crucial factor promoting stakeholder to collaborate.Being an adaptive system.stakeholder collaboration should own resource integration capability, relationship governance capability and collaborative performance achievability.Hence, the study on stakeholder collaboration mechanism should focus on three essential factors, consisting of formation, operation and performance of the stakeholder collaboration. Objective 2 aims to explore an organization mode for promoting stakeholders to collaborate and achieve resource integration for reducing construction cost.Guided by Stakeholder Theory and Social Network Theory, this study aims to redesign a virtual organizational structure of prefabricated buildings, providing a platform for stakeholders to achieve resource integration and economies of scale using semi-structure interview, questionnaire and social network analysis. The results suggested that the virtual organizational structure consists of actors, relations and spatial structures, which provides an interface for stakeholder collaboration. Objective 3 aims to explore a dual governance mechanism for protecting the operation of stakeholder collaboration mechanism to reduce construction cost.Guided by Stakeholder Theory and Evolutionary Game Theory, this study aims to explore a dual governance mechanism, consisting of contract and trust relational governance mechanism through evolutionary models, protecting the stakeholder collaboration to save construction cost. The findings suggested that stakeholders should design the formal contract governance and informal trust governance to protect collaboration between stakeholders with construction cost reduced. Objective 4 aims to explore the effect of stakeholder collaboration on construction cost of prefabricated buildings by analysis of performance of stakeholder collaboration.Guided by Synergistic Theory and Social Network Theory, this study focuses on exploring the effect of stakeholder collaboration on construction cost using semi-structure,questionnaire and case studies. The findings suggested that stakeholder collaboration has a positive effect on construction cost, and social network relations acts as a mediator between stakeholder collaboration and construction cost. This study explores the motivation, formation, operation and performance of stakeholder collaboration to reducing construction cost. The results suggested that:(1)being an adaptive system, stakeholder collaboration consists of resource integration capability, relationship governance capability and collaborative performance achievability to reduce construction cost;(2)virtual organizational structure provides stakeholders a platform to collaboration and standardization through resource integration;(3)the dual relational governance mechanism consists of formal contract and informal trust, which can protect the operation of stakeholder collaboration to reduce construction cost;(4)stakeholder collaboration positively affects construction cost of prefabricated buildings, and also affects stakeholder's social network relationships, which revealing the mediating effect of the social network relationship. This study contributes knowledge to existing literature by exploring the stakeholder collaboration, including the formation, integration, operation and feedback to reducing construction cost.It provides the management innovation for construction management and stakeholder management in prefabricated buildings.Meanwhile, the findings provide practical implications for government and project managers with policies and strategies related to prefabricated buildings.
