A large number of porcelains have been unearthed in the Tang tombs in the northern region since the 1930 s,especially since the founding of the People's Republic of China. These porcelains are important materials for studying the Ceramic Archaeology of the Tang Dynasty.Based on these materials, this thesis makes an archaeological study on the types, periods, regions and the kiln ports of porcelains. This thesis includes six chapters. The first chapter is introduction, which discusses and defines the key concepts of the topic, such as the scopes of time and space, the objects of study, and explains the research methods and objectives of this thesis. At the same time,it combs the history of research systematically and summarizes the previous achievements and shortcomings. The second chapter is a study of types. This paper tries to analyze the information of the ages, kiln ports and functions reflected by different types of porcelains.Establishes the chronology of the main pottery objects, and preliminarily discusses the origin and function of a few porcelains in combination with previous research results, literatures, murals and other related materials. The third chapter is a study on the stages.Based on the types and chronological achievements of second chapter, this chapter observes the stages of the development of porcelains in the northern part of Tang Dynasty, and divides them into four periods and five stages. They are the first half of the seventh century, from the second half of the seventh century to the first half of the eighth century(divided into two stages by about 700s),the middle and late eighth century, from the end of the eighth century to the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the tenth century. In summarizing the changes of each period and combining with historical documents, this thesis attempts to explore the historical problems reflected by changes in different periods from the perspectives of politics, economy, population and handicraft industry development. The fourth chapter is the study of the regional research and the kiln ports, which is mainly based on materials from tombs, supplemented by sites and collections of books and items. This thesis divides the northern region into five regions.Region A mainly includes modern Henan Province, mostly belongs to the west of Henan Road and the south of Hebei Road in Tang Dynasty.Region B mainly includes modern Hebei,Beijing,Tianjin,Liaoning and Shanxi Provinces, mostly belongs to Hebei and Hedong Roads in Tang Dynasty.Region C mainly includes modern Shaanxi,Ningxia and southern Gansu Provinces, mostly belongs to Guannei Road in Tang Dynasty.Region D mainly includes modern Shandong Province, mostly belongs to the east part of Henan Road in Tang Dynasty.Region E mainly includes modern western Inner Mongolia Province. There are also several sub-regions in each region. There are obvious differences in the appearance, kiln ports, consumptions, circulations and ages of porcelains in each region. After summarizing the regionality of these porcelains and combining with historical documents, this thesis attempts to discuss the political, war, development of porcelains industry, transportation and other factors contributing to the formation of these regionalities. In the fifth chapter,I observe the characteristics and stages of the exchange and consumption of porcelains between the north and the South by sorting out the porcelains unearthed, which belongs to the South kiln ports, such as Yue Yao and Changsha Yao.The sixth chapter is the conclusion.
