| Population aging is a highly foreseeable long-term trend in China.It is also,of all global issues,one of the most significant risks to global prosperity in the decades ahead because of its potentially profound social implications.Obviously,science has managed to prolong life.Now the entire society endeavor to help seniors improve and maintain functional capacity so that quality of life remains high and health costs remain low.Health is a state of complete physical,mental and social well-being.Physical fitness is the ability to perform aspects of sports,occupations and daily activities.Overall,a significant amount of evidence has accumulated regarding the benefits of regular exercise and physical activity for older adults.The goals of exercise training are quite different among the general population,the athletes,and the patients who require rehabilitation.Subsequently,it will bringing about the differences in goals and exercise modality.Physical exercise has positive effects on athletic ability,body composition,and physiological function.Athletic ability involves fundamental movement and sports skills,fundamental movement skills reflect in the efficiency and economy of a single movement,fundamental sports skills incorporate the best features of strength,stamina,suppleness,coordination,balance,agility,etc.This study aims to provide deeper insights and develop better approaches to improve physical health of older adults,in order to maximize the benefits they derive from exercise training,the athletic ability assessment tool and training program for the elderly have been designed via the method of theoretical deduction and empirical analysis.The experiment was performed in Wuhan,China,226 healthy old adults(60-76 years old)who have used Taiji or dancing as their main form of exercise for at least two years were randomized to intervention group(66 men,66 women,mean age 66.5 ±3.8)and control group(40 men,54 women,mean age 66.9 ±3.5),and started with the athletic ability assessment,found there was no statistically significant difference among two groups in all aspects.Control group remained Taiji or dancing for exercise,whereas intervention group underwent the additional functional training for 12 months.Compared with the control group,the intervention group shows significant improvement in muscle strength,coordination,and balance.In conclusion,deficiencies in all aspects of athletic ability are common among samples,reflecting the prevalence of cognitive bias against physical fitness and impropriety of exercise modality.Strength,coordination,balance improved significantly after 12 months of functional training compared with controls.Taken together,the athletic ability assessment tool is beneficial for older adults to know their weak point,and functional training to improve athletic ability of older adults is effective and reliable. |
