In recent decades,notably in the current period,global climate change has become a severe natural disaster that threatens the survival and development of all human beings and organisms on the planet.In this urgent situation,Vietnam is one of the five countries most affected by climate change over the world.In addition to adopting practical policies and actions to prevent global climate change,educating communities,particularly the younger generation,about the issue is one of the key strategic goals of countries around the world,including Vietnam.Since 2011,the Ministry of Education and Training(MOET)of Vietnam has decided to integrate climate responses into its education programs.A primary form of education is the integration of related subjects(including the discipline of Geography)through extracurricular activities to improve young generations' climate understanding,awareness of environmental protection,and the ability of disaster prevention and mitigation.Based on practical needs and situations,the author has chosen "A Practical Study on Climate Change Education through Geography Discipline in High-Schools of Vietnam" as the topic of the doctoral dissertation.The purpose of the thesis is to study further the theory and practice of climate change education in Vietnamese academia and to propose appropriate educational methods to improve the effectiveness of climate change education for students through the high-school Geography curriculum.Besides,the author has explored relevant literature of climate change education in Vietnam and abroad,surveying the contemporary status of the matter in high-schools of the country,analysing the content and teaching methods of climate education in the Geography discipline in high-schools of Vietnam,and pointing out the shortcomings of the education.Afterward,the thesis aims to improve the efficiency of climate change education via the subject of Geography in Vietnamese high-schools from three aspects.Firstly,focusing on the three-level educational goals of knowledge-skills-attitudes,as well as tending to develop students' enthusiasm,activeness,and innovation to reform the classroom contents and methods of climate change education.Secondly,strengthening the organisation of suitable extracurricular activities to change and supplement students'knowledge,cognition,and skills to cope with climate change.Lastly,the author has combined the development trend of educational informatization to designed an exclusive website on climate change education.The website plays as a carrier to explore the support strategies for climate education in Vietnamese high-schools that are effectively supporting the development of the educational tasks of high-school teachers,especially Geography teachers.In addition to prefaces and conclusions,the thesis is divided into five chapters to discuss related issues.The first chapter aims to analyse the concept and connotation of climate change education,its role and value in Vietnam,and the advantages of high-school Geography disciplines in implementing climate change education.The second chapter primarily investigates and interviews 164 teachers and 1.120 students of 12 high schools in seven provinces of Vietnam.Based on the obtained results,this chapter analyses the current status of climate change education in Vietnamese high schools today,as well as its causes and limitations.At the same time,this chapter explores the characteristics of climate change education literature and the plan content of Geography subjects in the country.As a result it finds out the advantages,disadvantages,and limitations of climate change education in Geography teachings in schools.By analysing the content and textbooks of the high-school Geography curriculum,and the educational tendencies of climate change education at home and abroad,the third chapter proposes the content of climate change education and its three-level goals of knowledge,skills,and attitudes.This chapter also presents the features,usages,and examples of eight appropriate and positive educational rules that can bring excellent results to climate change education.For the lessons with climate change education content,the thesis constructs the design process and standards of teaching activities,in consequence,the author also designs three model lesson plans for three grades of the high-school Geography curriculum.Then,the author conducted teaching experiments and taught three model lesson plans at two high schools in Thua Thien Hue,Vietnam to check the validity and feasibility of this research.The fourth chapter primarily introduces the concepts and significance of extra-curricular activities in achieving the goal of comprehensive education,and the current status of the action in Vietnamese high schools.This chapter also sets goals,rules,content,and procedures to organise extra-curricular activities of climate change responses effectively.The thesis proposes seven extra-curricular activities that can deepen the effects of climate change education,as well as their implementation methods and practical examples.Moreover,the author also designed two specific lesson plans for two extra-curricular activities in explaining the content and ways of organising the business for reference by high-school teachers.The fifth chapter mainly explains the creation and use of the climate change education website in the teaching of the Geography discipline in high schools.This section pertains to the concept and role of the website in the educational process,particularly in climate change education.It also mentions the rules for its design and creation,the construction process of the climate change education website,the content structure,interfaces,and directory content of the website.Additionally,this chapter also instructs teachers and students on the use of the climate change education website to improve the effectiveness of climate change education.
