Abstract/Summary:
Police officers often experience recurring traumatic and stressful situations as part of their occupation. These situations can negatively affect both their personal and professional lives. Research indicates significant findings concerning police personnel and such things as posttraumatic stress symptomology and job burnout. Psychological assistance and other programs exist to mollify negative ramifications; however, their effectiveness may fall under fire because they may not be appropriately modified for police officers or highly utilized by the police community. The machismo culture and fears of demotions often serve as strong deterrents to employ already existing programs. This study focuses on current attitudes, lifestyles, and experiences of police officers with attention given to trauma exposure, police culture, and how police officers view current psychological programs.
