Abstract/Summary:
The present study attempted to replicate previous research by Lorr and Strack (1994), in which cluster analysis techniques were used to group police officer candidates with respect to their derived personality profiles. Based on relative consistencies in the literature, it was hypothesized that the clusters in Lorr and Strack's research would be replicated in a sample of 13,171 police recruits in the present study. The results of the cluster analysis yielded two distinct subtypes of police candidates. The findings revealed significant profile differences compared to those of Lorr and Strack. In particular, an inverse relationship was found between clusters. Compared to the former study, participants scored lower on Extraversion, Independence, and Control, but higher on Tough Poise. Evidence of reliability and validity of the clusters is presented as well as comparison with the findings of the former study.
