Abstract/Summary:
The present study explores the use of psychodrama as a possible therapeutic intervention for increasing awareness of the patient's understanding of the self in relation to her parent as the "other." The origins and development of psychodrama is discussed, drawing upon concepts traditionally and more modernly used in psychodrama. This study examines how role-playing the parent allows the patient to understand what her parents experienced. Additionally, this study proposes that role-playing the parent within a psychodrama can be used to help the patient recognize the impact of her parents on her own psychological development. Cultural dynamics are especially highlighted to help the protagonist recognize the impact of her culture on her current parental conflict. The study concludes with a proposal for how the patient may role-play the parent, highlighting the beginnings of understanding the self in relation to problems with a parent.
