Project success factors and information technology project success

The research conducted for this study sought to offer insights into project management factors and information technology (IT) project success by examining whether nontraditional factors influences the successful implementation of IT projects. The nontraditional factors are senior leader perceived value, senior leader perception of the project's alignment to the organization's mission/strategic goals, and senior leader promotion of IT benefits by using strategic communication prior to or during project implementation. Stakeholder and social issues are often the main source of problems for IT project managers. Nevertheless, the emphasis for IT implementation success is often on the technological or technical issues with little significance given to stakeholder and organizational change dynamics. IT is not only computer technology, software and hardware, but it is also the integration of these components into a total, functional, and usable system. The testing results suggest that only one of the nontraditional factors, strategic communication of IT benefits by senior leaders during project implementation, when coupled with traditional factors contribute to IT project success. Conversely, frequency responses indicate that all of the nontraditional factors, when combined with the traditional factors, contribute to IT project success.
