Abstract/Summary:
This study investigated the Music Education curriculum at member institutions in the Coalition of Christian Colleges and Universities with an undergraduate enrollment of over one thousand. Thirty-seven of the 104 CCCU institutions met the criteria of enrollment and degree offerings for inclusion in this study. Statistics show that CCCU Institutions have had a 67.3% increase in enrollment during the years 1992 to 2001. Accrediting organizations such as North Central, NCATE, and NASM mandate that periodic curriculum review be conducted. Program review within the CCCU is necessary if institutions expect to maintain their accreditation status and remain competitive in a rapidly growing market.; Research previously conducted by Schmidt (1985), Canaan (1986), and Wollenzein (1999) guided and influenced this study. An online survey tool was used to facilitate the examination. Data were organized into four categories: music content, demographics, the music faculty and students, and the professional education curriculum. Data were summarized and similarities and differences among the music education curriculums of the CCCU institutions were noted. Comparisons were made between the curriculums of the 28 institutions that are accredited by NASM and the 9 institutions that are not.; Consistent with the findings of this study and numerous studies on this topic is the great variability in curriculum and organization of the music unit. The data collected in this study may help to guide music educators in the process of program review. It may also suggest a variety of configurations for curriculum and resources.
