Abstract/Summary:
This study examines the editing performance of 20 American and 20 Korean participants (each with 10 basic and 10 advanced participants) as they detected and corrected errors in supplied standard essays based on Hull's (1983a) operational error types and error correcting strategies (consulting, intuiting, and comprehending). Misdetection, miscorrection, and stylistic changes were included in this analysis.;Two of the most important findings were that feedback (highlighted location) provided an effective scaffolding strategy especially for basic writers to effectively erase the differences between basic and advanced writers in error detection and error correction, and participants detected significantly higher rates of comprehension errors than consulting errors in standard essays. Other findings confirmed expected differences between Koreans and Americans and basic and advanced groups.
