Advanced-stage L2 Learners' Use Of Chinese Prepersitions Analysis & Corresponding Teaching Strategies Study

This essay analyzes the usage of prepositions by intermediate and advanced students of Chinese.We identify the 14 Chinese prepositions that are often used and most likely to be used incorrectly.We then classified the errors.Our hope is that analysis can improve teaching methods,thus raising the learning efficiency of intermediate and advanced students of Chinese as well as other learners from foreign countries. We used the 57 prepositions that are listed in Chinese Characters of HSK Graded Outline as a basis for testing.We calculated the usage and error rates of these 57 prepositions,and lastly chose 14 out of the 57 prepositions to analyze.These prepositions are:为了,为,从,随着,关于,把,给,以,比,被,对,在,向,对于。After analyzing these errors,we found out that the errors concerning the usage of these 14 prepositions can be classified into four aspects:position,eg.在and从should be used in the sentence or before the sentence;matching,eg.if we have to use而with the preposition;mixed usage,eg.为了and为,and finally when a preposition should be used,eg.向大家抱怨and抱怨大家.Then we analyze why mistakes were made and finally suggest some methods for teaching prepositions.
