Abstract/Summary:
This study explored the demographic characteristics, health status and nature of social support of elderly Pilipino immigrants in Philadelphia. A qualitative research method was used in order to obtain information on their immigration experiences as aging individuals in a foreign country. The intent of the research was to generate rather than to test hypotheses. A convenient sample of 20 elderly Pilipino immigrants was interviewed for the study. Instruments utilized for the study were developed by the researcher based on the literature review. Two groups of elderly Pilipino immigrants reside in Philadelphia--the first group consists of mostly men, who came when they were less than 40 years old, and the second group consists of mostly women over 60 years old, who were petitioned by their children. Forty five percent earned college degrees, 45% finished high school and 10% earned their elementary education. They speak English fluently. They live in intergenerational households and take an active part in the care of their grandchildren. Among the medical problems identified are arthritis, hypertension, back pains, cardiac problems, diabetes and occasional headaches. In spite of their medical problems, the majority of elderly immigrants reported that they have no limitation in the performance of their activities of daily living. Traditional folk remedies as well as Western medicine are used to alleviate or treat medical problems. Formal services are used only as a last recourse and with approval from family members. The elderly consume and provide support to persons in the host and home countries. The majority of immigrants signified intention to go back to the Philippines to die or be buried there. Implications for social work practice, social policy and social work education in the Philippines and the United States are presented.
