A STUDY OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CENTRAL ADMINISTRATIVE TEAMS PSYCHOLOGICAL TYPE VARIABLES AND THEIR PERCEPTION OF THE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between school districts central administrative teams psychological type variables and their perception of the management system. Also investigated was the relationship between the superintendent's psychological type variables and the central administrative team's perception of the management system. The sample consisted of 20 teams randomly selected from school districts surrounding a large midwestern city. Team size, including the superintendent, ranged from 4 to 12.;The analysis of data revealed no significant relationship between (a) the central administrative team's psychological type variable index scores and their management system score, and (b) the superintendent's psychological type variable index scores and the central administrative team's management system score. Based upon these findings, psychological type does not appear to be a factor in determining perception of management systems. Since group mean scores were used in this study, a different approach in gathering information may be needed to allow for the various combinations of psychological type within a team. It is, therefore, recommended (a) a study be developed to compare the interaction of these psychological type variables of administrative teams within each of the four management systems, (b) a case study be developed to investigate the relationship between the administrative team's psychological type variables and the school district's perception of the management system, and (c) a case study be developed to investigate the relationship between the superintendent's psychological type variables and the school district's perception of the management system.;Team members, including the superintendent, completed the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), which provided a score for each of four psychological type variables: extraversion-introversion, sensing-intuition, thinking-feeling, and judging-perceiving. In addition, the participants completed Likert's Profile of Organizational Characteristics (POC) questionnaire. The POC questions assessed the organizational characteristics of leadership, motivation, communication, decision making, goal setting, and control, which collectively determined the management system score. Data obtained from the MBTI and the POC were analyzed using the Pearson Product-Moment correlation coefficient. A probability level of .05 was utilized to test for significance.
