Research On Functional Design Of Walkway Boundary In Hong Kong

The function of walkway boundary is closely related to human behaviors,traffic safety,spatial order,commercial and public activities,and spatial characteristics,and its functional design has an important influence on the vitality of the walkway space.With the rapid development of the city and the pursuit of space vitality,the function of walkway boundary gradually expands from meeting the basic traffic needs to the non-traffic needs,showing different need level of basic need,performance need and excitement need.However,due to the emphasis on motorized traffic in traffic planning and design,the current walkway boundary function focuses on different traffic modes and spatial separation,and there is less attention to the interaction requirements and design of walkway boundaries.The existing functions and design guidances mainly exist in the research of some norms,standards,regulations,guidelines and pedestrian systems,and lack of research targeted and systematic functional design research.In order to improve the delicacy of the design of walkway boundary function,it is necessary to study the influencing factors,values,systems and methods of walkway boundary function design.By consulting the historical documents,academic documents,planning policies and design documents of Hong Kong urban design to study the related research background,theories and methods of walkway boundary function design;Through interviewing with government agencies,community organizations or public welfare groups,the causes,needs and evaluation of design were explored;Through field study to analysis of the functional phenomenon of the walkway boundary,as well as the influencing factors,actual requirements and design methods of the walkway boundary function design.The walkway boundaries in Hong Kong urban area(concentrated on both sides of Victoria Harbour)was selected as the research object for its high degree of interaction with people,including Prince Edward,Mong Kok,Olympic,Yau Ma Tei,Jordan,Austin,Kowloon,Ho Man Tin,To Kwa Wan,Ma Tau Wai,Whampoa,Hung Hom,Tsim Sha Tsui,Causeway Bay,Wan Chai,Admiralty,Central and Sheung Wan;People’s attitudes and feedback of walkway boundary functional design were studied by using experimental method.The design status,design basis,influencing factors and design values of walkway boundary function were analyzed successively,and then the design strategies and methods were proposed.The conclusions are as follows: As the walkway changes from “channel” to “place”,the function of Hong Kong walkway boundary presents the characteristics of aggregation,diversity,acceptability,extensibility and variability;Four functional influential factors: Planning,Urban format,Activities and Pedestrian behavior were obtained by analyzing the boundary phenomena in Hong Kong;By examining what kind of design values the walkway boundary function should have,Four kinds of design values were put forward,that is,the space order improving value,space comfort improving value,space perception improving value and space vitality improving value;Based on the objective and means,the functional design strategy of walkway bou ndary was proposed.The design objective is to construct a flexible walkway boundary function system.Design means include needs-driven,technology-driven and functional design system construction of walkway boundary.The functional design system of walkway boundary includes four categories: traffic needs function,behavior needs function,additional needs function and place needs fun ction.Three kinds of design methods were put forward,which are the guiding design methods,the spatial function design methods and the technical cooperation design methods.
