The review of publishing is an important and indispensable part of publishing industry.It appears with the development of modern publishing technology and publishing format.Between the the late Qing Dynasty and the People's Republic of China,the Republic of China is the period of prosperity of the review of publishing.The introduction of Western technology has replaced the traditional printing technology by the advanced technology of mechanization and electrification.It has obvious advantages,such as efficient speed,saving in printing materials,huge quantity,low cost and high quality.Official press,church press,private printing offices and other communication agencies,especially the rise and prosperity of private printing enterprises,compete fiercely for the market and profits,making the publishing industry possess industrial characteristics.The presses,large and small,which have their own readers,goals and beliefs,the publishing policy,participate in market competition.So the competition is very complex and disorder.The whole publishing industry is developing at a high speed,and the types and numbers of publications are expanding.At the same time,many pressers didn't know what course to take when they suffered the continuing war,autocracy by warlords and imperfect management regulations.The publishing industry was in chaos due to over-commercialization,riddled pirate and curiosa.The intricacies of the publishing in the Republic of China will not only provide much sourse material for the review of publishing,and build up public platform for independent speech from the new intellectual groups.From the perspective of sociology,politics,ethics,literature and art,economics and pedagogy,they evaluated and discussed the problems,advantages,shortcomings and trends of publishing industry.These review of publishing which displayed the intense questionable consciousness,and focused the reality of publishing,greatly enlarged capacity,expanded coverage of the traditional review.They were progressively moving toward independent,conscious,rational and mature.The review of publishing in the Republic of China,is not only showing the historical development and evolution in the first half of twentieth Century,but presenting a vivid snapshot and principal character of publishing industry.All of these may compose a wonderful picture of modern publishing culture.On the basis of histric materials,this dissertation will consider and analyse comprehensively and objectively the review of publishing in he period of the Republic of China under the framework of the "5W" theory of communication.This dissertation is made up of six sections.In the introduction,It expatiates the origin and significance,summarizes the achievement and the shortage of the former research,defines and clarifies the main concepts involved in the paper,and introduces the research method and the arrangement of the content structure.From the longitudinal dimension,the first chapter studys the historical evolution of the review of publishing in the Republic of China.The stages are divided into four sections:the formative stage(1912-1918),the booming stage(1919-1937),the transitional stage(1938-1945),the alienated stage(1946-1949),and describes the characters of those review of publishing and study the development of total stages.The second chapter analyzes the subject and carrier of the review of the Republic of China.It is a channel factor in the process of communication,which becomes the external form factor of the review of publishing.By analyzing the author group and its characteristics of different occupation or cultural identity and discussing the styles as a special form of carrier,It can reflect the diversity and richness of the reviews of publishing in the period of the Republic of China.The third chapter and the fourth chapter respectively analyze the theme and content of the review of publishing in the Republic of China from the introverted perspective and extroverted perspective of publishing ecology.It mainly includes the discussion of publishing freedom,supervision and suggestion for publishing industry development,criticism of publishing anomie,comments on publications and comments on publishing professional business.The fifth chapter studys the effect and influence of the review of publishing in the Republic of China.This is the effect field in the process of communication.It discusses the impact which brought by the review of publishing on innovation by publishing production,external management system adjustment and changes of publishing culture outlook.Last,the conclusion part is based on the theory of embeddedness by Karl Polanyi,which runs through the study of the review of publishing in the Republic of China.It focuses on the complex relationship between review of publishing as a disembedness power of publishing industry and political,economic,cultural and readers in the Republic of China.
