Based on the Textual Genre Theory and Functional Equivalence Theory, the author conducts an in-depth comparative study on Contextual Configuration,Generic Structure Potential,Network System and Textual Patterns of Minutes of Meeting(MOM),Memorandum of Understanding(MOU),Agreement,Commercial Volume and Technical Volume, which constitute the five basic elements of Sino-English engineering business contracts. At the same time, the author has analyzed the similarities and differences of engineering business contracts written in Chinese and English at the macro and micro levels, found the defect of "Sydney School" on the linear arrangement of factors in GSP(Generic Structural Potential)expression, carried on the elimination on such defects and refined GSP expression. Finally, the author constructs a contract model that can meet the requirements of both Chinese and English bilingual engineering business contracts,as well as optimizes relevant translation strategies and specific translation techniques via the design and practical operation of the mutual translation experiment on such kind of textual genre, and gives constructive suggestions on how to improve the professional quality of relevant translators on engineering projects. Therefore, this research has reflected certain research value and significance in both theory and practice. The content of this doctoral dissertation is divided into six chapters:Chapter One: Introduction. This chapter introduces the reason of topic selection, the object, significance and goal of the research, the theoretical basis of the research as well as the relevant literature review.Chapter Two: This chapter is one of the main parts of the dissertation, referring to a comparative study on the macroscopic forms of the textual modes of Chinese and English engineering business contracts. The author makes an in-depth study of the textual genres of engineering business contracts written in English and Chinese, analyzes the similarities and differences between engineering business contracts written in English and Chinese from three aspects: contextual configuration, generic structure potential and network system.Chapter Three: This chapter is another main part of the dissertation, referring to a comparative study on the microscopic forms of the textual modes of Chinese and English engineering business contracts. The author takes the main components of engineering business contract as the object of study and makes a comparative analysis of the characteristics of the textual patterns,so as to obtain the microscopic characteristics of engineering business contracts written in both Chinese and English.Chapter four: After completing the comparative study of textual patterns characteristics on Chinese and English engineering business contracts, the author aims to construct a textual model of Chinese and English engineering business contracts.Firstly, the author makes a detailed analysis on several main factors of the model at the macro and micro levels. The objects of analysis include contextual configuration, generic structure potential, genre and textual types.Secondly, according to the analysis results, the author constructed a textual model of Chinese and English engineering business contracts. Finally, the author tests each component part of the model by using ‘reduction to absurdity’ to obtain feedback and then improve the textual model.Chapter Five: The research aims at providing theoretical support for the translation of Chinese and English engineering business contracts,as well as improving the translation strategies and skills of Chinese and English engineering business contracts. Therefore, the author of this chapter takes this as the key purpose to design the experiment of mutual translation between Chinese and English engineering business contracts for testing the research results and practical application effect.Chapter Six: Conclusion. The author summarizes the main achievements of this research and points out the innovation and deficiency of this research objectively. Finally, the author puts forward pertinent suggestions for the research on the textual pattern of Chinese and English engineering business contracts, which emphasizes the importance of such research. |
