With the fast development of the country economy, environmental protection and monitoring has become a thorny issue and attracts a great concern of the national government and the common people. While the fund for environment protection from government and society increasing year after year, the industry and scientific research is meeting a flourishing age. The research of this text is based on the subproject'Research and Development of Networked Environment Monitoring Instruments'of"The Tenth Five-Year Plan of China"on Key Technology Research Programs'Standardized Application Demonstration for Scientific Instrument Industrialization', which Beijing PGeneral Instrument company and Jilin University(analysis instrument research and development laboratory) work together to perform research. The target of the subject is to realize network for the various environment analysis instruments. The portable data exchange, which is focused in this text, gives the ability to ambulant environment monitoring and treat with outburst event of environment pollution.The portable data exchange is a bridge between monitor center and environment analysis instruments. Through the portable data exchange, monitor center gets data from environment analysis instruments, control and maintain the remote instruments. And then, the portable data exchange should give the precision position and real time in case of executing the law. Weighed with the performance, cost, size and ability of updating, it is the best choice for the portable data exchange that using the embedded system, the speedily advancing technology currently.The hardware platform is a foundation of the embedded system. The portable data exchange uses the ARM9 CPU S3C2410. The features of S3C2410 include powerful computing speed and abundance periphery device, which help for improving the system performance and reducing size. The portable data exchange uses the GPRS network for remote communication. So, the design of communication software can consult mature code in the area of computing network. The portable data exchange has some auxiliary functions such as GPS orientation and real time. For consumer's need, the portable communication module can be added some selective functions: touch screen, keypad and phone. The portable data exchange has a changing circuit of LI-on battery, which is beneficial to improve the working duration and reduce the size and weight of module.The design of software for the portable data exchange is base on LINUX operating system, which having the advantages as open source, enough resource, and easy for updating. The software has the unification protocols of instrument interface, which administers to expanding the environment monitoring network for more other types instruments. The portable data exchange realizes the remote software updating. The software and parameter of the portable data exchange can be updated from monitor center via GPRS link.After having tests in Changchun and Beijing, it is proved that the portable data exchange achieve the requirement of design. The environment monitoring Netware consists of the portable data exchange, data adapter, sever, client and analysis instrument, which can get remote environment data, release the account result, manage and maintain the analysis instrument in the network. In the future work, the portable data exchange should be checked in the practical field to improve functions and reliability according to the user's demand, so that contribute for environment protection project.
