At the end of 20th century, with the development of technology of computer and network, computing environment was trending towards distributed from centralizing. Among these modes, multi-tier distribute Client/Server structure mode has been widely adopted in the large-scale application system's design and exploration. Using the technology features of Delphi support Client/Server, a database has been developed that can provide some initial data for research and developing of advanced mold materials and technology supporting for mold designer and manufacturer.Based on the present states of design and manufacture in domestic mould industry, this paper had investigated the classify methods of mould materials with their process plan and performance, as well as the basic ways of specifying and organizing relative data. According to diversity in chemical constitution and heat processing of mould material under working, it was divided into seven classes, including unalloyed, pre-hardening, case-hardened, age-hardening, corrosion resistant, quench-hardening and non hardened and tempered. In addition, the select suitable material principles and influencing factors of plastic mould material were summarized. Engineer could take into account the principle of service performance, processing property, economical property and so on, and considerate the species, molding methods, output order, complexity, dimensional precision, surface roughness and so on, and select optimum material form selectable material eventually.In the development process of plastic mould material database system, the principle of practicability, advance and expandability had been abided by. On the basis of this, a database for mould material, process plan and performance was established, and the data includes species, trademarks, components, physical property, mechanical property, heat treatment methods, major applications of the materials and so on, which was stored and managed systematically and scientifically based on Client/Server structure and developed by Delphi 7.0 software. It has five modules including select suitable material, heat treatment, database maintenance, user management and system help. A high performance and opening database application system was developed which data can be searched conveniently, and the system can be extended and maintained easily. Further more, the database can perform query of major application, trademark, compound, mechanical property, and output order. Accurate query, fuzzy query and quantitative query could help user finding the information in demand easily. The functions of data insert, modify, and delete make the relative information of material of database can be updated real time. The module of user management was divided into administrator and general user for safety of data. The developed plastic mould material database system has the features which interface friendly, operation easily, visual and accurate query, and preferable practicality. The application of plastic mould material database system could help manufacturer to select reasonable mould material and decrease cost under assuring the service life of mould.
