Urban rivers have been playing an important role with the development of city and society. Recently, many new concepts were raised, such as"living harmoniously with nature and environment","environmentally friendly society", and"ecological civilization", the management and construction of urban river has been changed dramatically. At present, the ecological approach seemed to be the best way to deal with the current problems and situations which our urban rivers are confronting with, and which could meet the needs of ecology, society and economy. Hopefully, it could put forward the significance of the method and provide some ideas for relevant research regarding the river security and sustainable development.Firstly, by reviewing the theories and practices from both domestic and overseas on urban river management, this thesis elaborated on the topic of urban river's concept and connotation from the perspective of ecological system. Secondly, it took Beijing as the breakthrough to address the problems and discussed the reasonable conformation of urban rivers in Beijing. Thirdly, it proposed the ecological management for urban river in Beijing as follow:To ensure the flood prevention security and make good use of water resources;To reduce the pressures of human impacts on the river;To maintain the river's habitat diversity and the species diversity; andTo improve the river's ecosystem service function, as well as to enhance the river's landscape quality.Furthermore, by introducing and analysing recent cases on urban river'management in Beijing, especially it took the integrated management project of Shuiya River in Fengtai district as an example, in order to explore the thoughts and mode for river control which would promote coordinated growth on local ecological, social and economical aspects. Finally, it identified some potential problems from view of the existing issues and suggested some strategies and principles on the ecological management practice of urban river in Beijing.
