The economic and social development of Zhejiang province has made tremendous progress since the reform and opening-up policy. It is quite necessary to explore whether the development is sustainable or not.So we can not only summary and evaluate the past achievements, but also forsight and guide the future development.Because of these, the article will use the ecological footprint model to objectively and truthfully evaluate the ecological footprint of Zhejiang Province in the past decades, which will be able to guide future development in return.First of all, the thesis consults a number of papers, keeping abreast of current development in the subject of ecological footprint at home and abroad, and then finding out the insufficient section. On the basis, this article applicate the model to calculate Zhejiang Province's ecological footprint, ecological capacity and ecological surp/lus/deficit from 1996 to 2008.The results reveal that Zhejiang Province has been in a State of ecological deficit for the past 13 years, and its trend is increased in the future. This article will focus on explaining the reason of the results in order to be able to break through the formerly research. This article primarily uses dynamic and regression analysis to look into the causes of ecologi-cal deficit. The results show that there is no significant correlation between the economic development and ecological deficit. So we can't simply say the deficit is due to the economic deve-lopment.In fact, there are many other factors that can affect the ecology footprint, for example the rise of living standard of the people.the quickness of urbanization and the increasing number of the floating population, which are caused by the development of economic.Besides, the article further approach the imperfections of the model to analyse the reasons of deficit. For instance, single evaluation index;space mutual exclusion assumption;insufficient consid eration of human vigorous etc.can also lead to ecological deficit.
