With the extensive application of abrasive belt grinding technology, higher and higher requirements for abrasive belt grinder are proposed. More varieties and small batches customer-ordered will be the development trend. However, the development of abrasive belt grinder is slow in our country. Many factories still use common design method, leading to long design cycle and high production cost, so can't meet customer-ordered needs and adapt to fierce market competition. Modular design is one of the key techniques to achieve product diversification rapid design, which has great significance for manufacturing enterprises to enhance their ability to respond to market demand quickly and to occupy a vantage position in the market competition.The design method combined modular and parametric design is proposed on the basis of studying modular design principles and methods. In order to meet customer's individual requirement for products, some modules can be re-designed or variant designed. Module division and module configuration of centerless external abrasive belt grinder, Pro/E re-development are studied. Then, the modular design system for external abrasive belt grinder is developed. The main research contents of the paper are as follows:1. The research background and significance are illustrated firstly, and the research status of grinder home and abroad are reviewed. The modular design concept and technical economic significance are introduced. The supporting theories and key technologies of modular design are studied. The concept of combined modularization and parameterization is proposed.2. The module division algorithm and technology of centerless external abrasive belt grinder are researched. The function module division method based on functional decomposition is given. By this way the function modules of centerless external abrasive belt grinder are created.3. The Quality Function Deployment method is introduced in modular design. And the house of quality of centerless external abrasive belt grinder is established, to achieve the transformation of customer requirement. The simple module library of centerless external abrasive belt grinder is created. And then, the selection of similar modules and the module configuration are also studied.4. On the basis of theories mentioned above, an external abrasive belt grinder modular design system is founded, and its main functions are illustrated. Some modules'design examples of the system are given. The combination both modularization and parameterization is achieved.
