The speed reducer is a kind of common transmission device, which has already widely applied in different industries at present. But the traditional design of speed reducer can not be satisfied for the new request of the reducer's structure and performance to the enterprises. In order to solve the reducer's design problems of the long design cycle, the high design cost and so on, the modem design method such as Virtual Prototyping Technology, can be applied in the reducer's design. Virtual Prototyping Technology is a new design method, which is a digital design method based on the simulated models of the products. According to Virtual Prototyping Technology, design optimizing, performance testing, manufacturing simulation and using simulation on the simulated models can be done by the designers, users and manufactures in the virtual environment at the earlier stage. This is very meaningful to enlighten design innovation, improve design quality, reduce the errors and shorten the designing time. The application of Virtual Prototyping Technology in our country's speed reducer industry is still not very mature. So this research will have reference valve to these advanced manufacture technologies applying in the reducer manufacture industry.The paper takes Cylindrical gear speed reducer as study object based on virtual prototyping technology using the integration with three-dimensional modeling software Pro/E(PRO/ENGINEER), mechanical dynamics simulation software ADAMS (Automatic Dynamic Analysis Mechanical System) and structural analysis module Pro/MECHANICA, and a set of design method is given.The content of the research mainly includes:firstly, the three-dimensional parameterized models is established and the virtual assembly of reducer is completed and the interference for gear transmission system is checked by using Pro/E software; secondly, the transmission system of speed reducer is analyzed by dynamic simulation, and gears'contact force is calculated by using mechanical dynamics simulation software ADAMS which can offer the boundary conditions of the design for further study in the Pro/MECHANICA; thirdly, static analysis and model analysis of shaft are completed on the basis of the boundary conditions, which can check the performance of shaft, and on the basis of static analysis, the most sensitive design parameters to the shaft can be identified through local sensitivity analysis, the reasonable scope of the most sensitive design parameters is determined through the global sensitivity analysis, finally optimal design is carried on; lastly, theoretical ideas and methods of optimal design of cylindrical gear speed reducer's overall system is discussed.
