The understanding of preposition plays a very important role in natural language understanding. This paper describes that the natural language understanding of the boundary of preposition is applied to the mechanical product design. Through analyzing and understanding the clients'requirements which are expressed in the form of natural language, we transform the results into the design requirements and parameters, thus obtain good effects.This paper first introduces general overview of research situation of natural language understanding at home and broad, makes a brief introduction about the present research of the boundary of preposition and its difficulties and research significance, analyzes several common knowledge representation methods in the natural language understanding. According to the characteristics of natural language understanding, this paper adopts concept dependency theory as its core and framework structure as its form, combing the two knowledge representation methods. Then the related theories of the preposition are introduced, the function of jurisdiction forming by the structure of preposition is discussed, and the detailed classifications are also carried on. At the same time, several kinds of methods to judge whether the boundary of preposition is terminated are proposed. Next, basing on the current system structure, the semantic analysis of the time and site prepositions have been done, the boundary of preposition model of detailed understanding have been constructed. Combing the characteristics of jurisdiction forming by the structure of time and site preposition, the related rules of semantic analysis of the structure of the preposition have been finished, and the semantic understanding of its boundary has also been realized. At last, the natural language understanding model of the boundary of preposition is applied to mechanical product design in the field of needs analysis, through debugging, the system runs well.
