Research On Confucius Temple In Qufu From The Perspective Of Communication Media

Qufu Confucian temple is a typical ancient Chinese royal architecture style. It was just used as a temple for memorializing Confucius and including three rooms. However, with the centralization of Confucianism, artistry of Confucian temple was increased as well and gradually reached to imperial-class. There are already lots studies on Confucian temples, but mostly on the perspectives about construction history, architectural complex, sacrificial ritual and Confucian Temple conservation. Researches regarding Confucian Temple as a media, however, are relatively insufficient. Thus, it will be a new research field for Confucianism if treat Confucian Temple as a media, and by doing so, to some extent, could fill the limitations of current communication that focus on mass media.During the2000years architectural development, Confucian temple had become one of the most important material carrier mediums for Confucianism. Feudal ruling class was therefore being maintained by transmitting rite, Golden mean, loyalty and filial piety and feudal hierarchy. This transmitting activity featured biased, however, a temporal and special stable carrier medium has durability on carrying and disseminating the information. Thus, even one door or a tile could be the medium and shows the essence of Confucianism.Confucian temple, as a ritual and ceremony, attracts publics’attention and participation by its architectural style and decoration. At the same time, by through participation or watching, public adopted Confucius ideas and values, and formed the identity of the rule of the feudal ideology, which is featured of priority in rank, loyalty and polite. More important is, Confucian temple built an ordered and controllable spatial construction as media. Under the view of ritual communication, Confucian temple as an enduring ritual, which lasts for2000years, spread and shared Confucius ideas and traditional morality and ethics. By achieving this common experience, the existing social forms and orders got confirmed and the social bond strengthened.Confucian temple, as a kind of medium, transmits information in architectural and decorative forms and gives us a comprehensive understanding on Confucianism and the core idea. In addition, it provides a relatively new thought for further Confucianism study. Moreover, I hope this study will also provides new thought for modern architecture industry which emphasis on technology and ignore the culture.
