Solar lighting takes an important position in the solar energy utilization, particularly the solar light industry with rapid development. However, there are still many problems need to be solved in the solar street light control system, especially the energy balance and stability and intelligent control of power supply. So the performance of controller and storage management strategy are always a research focus. Relying on the Chengdu Jintang International Triathlon Venue solar street lighting system, this paper researches the independent solar-powered lighting system control and battery status monitoring.In the first part, the paper analyzes the characteristics of solar panel, characteristics of lead-acid battery and method of the charge and discharge. Based on the theory of max power points tracing and optimization charging and discharging policy of battery, design a controller with adaptive functions based on a single-chip controller called AT89S52for the improvement of the charge and discharge. And propose a new method which is on basis of back propagation (BP) neural network forecast of valve regulated lead battery (VRLA) residual capacity discharge control method to real-time monitor the actual status of VRLA battery, thus improve the efficiency of system greatly and extend the service life of battery effectively.Use the charge method of three stages controlled by PWM and max power track algorithm to increase the output of photovoltaic arrays. In the case of discharging, predict the stage of charge according to BP neural network algorithm, then modulate the power level and working hours of LED. Connect the controller with host computer by serial port and monitor the battery working state accurately through Lab VIEW interface.To verify the validity of the study, design the module hardware circuits and build hardware platform under laboratory conditions, write the programs and corresponding algorithm in the C language environment. The experimental results prove that the conclusion is correct, the system works well and achieve the desired functionality.Finally, test the main functions of the controller system, the testing results prove that the system can meet the requirements of practical applications.
