Distribution automation is an effective means to enhance power supply reliability and energy quality, and is also an important research topic in power distribution area. Feeder automation is one of the important contents of the distribution automation. The remote terminal unit (FTU) is the fundamental control unit for the feeder automation, which plays an important role in realizing the feeder distribution automation. Extensive research has been dedicated to the functions of FTU according to the achievement and development made in China and abroad. A universal scheme of FTU suitable for feeder automation is then proposed, and the systematic design of both software and hardware for the controller is realized by means of 80C196KB single chip microprocessor. In the controller design, the universality suitable for both interconnection and section switches has been considered. The flexibility and practicality are verified to be the feature in hardware design, and the standard and modularity structures have been adopted in software design for the convenient function extension. Simulation has been made for the function of the controller after the design work. The results show that the main functions proposed in the paper have been realized, and the technical requirements for the controller have been met. The research work establishes a foundation for the extensive development of the perfect and integrated FTU device for the feeder automation.
