Diaphragm spring is widely used in the clutch of modern automobile. In this paper, a method of analyzing diaphragm spring in the run is described. An amended mathematical equation is established based on the new hypothesis.Then the stress distribution peculiarity of four corners of diaphragm spring in the run and its main failure reason are analyzed. It is the override stress in Point II that results in the fatigue failure of the spring.Afterwards, the method of optimization design and the concept of multicriteria optimization are introduced. Based on the sensitivity analysis formula, four single criteria optimizations and two multicriteria optimizations are given with the computer programming.Finally, the robust characteristic of the optimal values of the diaphragm spring is investigated based on the second sensitivity analysis. It is denoted that the h and t are the most important parameters in the design of spring. Sensitivity analysis techniques, as an important part of optimization design, can improve the design quality and speed up the design process and shorten the design cycle.
