South-Route and Middle-Route of South-to-North Water Transfer Project are the important parts of South-to-North Water Transfer Project. The construction of them is important for solving the water shortage problem in west of Huang-Huai-Hai plain, Shandong peninsula, Beijing and Tianjin areas and the area of North of China, for improving the ecological environment of diverting area, and for promoting the sustainable development of economy and society in diverting area. In order to grasp the correlative information of diverting area and supply area completely, it is necessary to do research about system simulation of the project, with which water resource dispatching status, water quality movement status and water works operating status in future can be simulated entirely. The research of simulation can still help to diagnose and forecast before the project launching into use and help to make decisions. The main results of the research are shown as follows:(1) Constructing simulation platform with GIS technique. The powerful storage, management and query functions of GIS in spatial data make it the indispensable module in simulation system. As the research of GIS subsystem in South-to-North Water Transfer simulation system, simulation platform and GIS software engineering are constructed on the base of the existing GIS technique and the characteristics and layout principles of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, so as to simulate the various of plans more directly and morescientific.(2) Building a distributed software system with good manipulability. The direct display of simulation result in this system will offer powerful sustain for decision-making. The using of software engineering technique make this subsystem not only has good compatibility with the mother system but also can be operated as a single one. The GIS simulation subsystem has such characteristics as good interface, convenience, expandable easily and distributed and so on, which make it adapt to the development current of computer science. The results of all the simulation subsystems are displayed in the simulation platform and netting with electronic sand plate subsystem and 3D scene subsystem by Internet technique. The link of this three subsystems make it possible to observe the entire project from different point of view.
