Semantic analysis of prepositional phrase in NLU (natural language understanding) is applied to product design by understanding and analysis of the user requirements in natural language style, which are conversed into the requirement of conceptual design, to support the future design.First, Method based on knowledge should be adopted in the natural language understanding applied to product design domain according to the characteristic of NLU. And conceptual dependency theory is chosen as an important complementarity to the method based on knowledge, through analysis and compares of several existing semantic analysis method present. Second, the importance of semantic analysis of prepositional phrases and structures in CNLU (Chinese Natural Language Understand) is illuminated briefly, and the semantic analysis will be the key breach in CNLU. Third, concludes and classify the common prepositional phrases in Chinese. And an effective processing has been done for Chinese prepositional phrases with shallow parsing and semantic analysis. At the same time, Conceptual dependency trees of'Time' and 'Location' are set up which will be the base of semantic analysis in the mechanical domain. Forth, semantic analysis program is written to understand sentence on the basis of the work done, which can understand Chinese sentence in corresponding fields. Last, semantic analysis of prepositional phrases is applied to requirement analysis system for mechanical transmission. By system testing, it turns up trumps.
