The Maintenance And Continuity Of The Spitit Of Place--A Research For Place Design Process Of The Hidtoric District

Now china is developing quickly. As a result, the economics is much better than before, and many places are citified in a high speed. Around the country, much construction work is being done, with great changes happened day by day. But at the same time, lots of problems about cities appeared, just like what happened in the western countries in the industry period. Such as: the renewal of the city mode, the continuity of the city culture, and the maintenance of the characteristics of the city.A historic district is a district in a large size, which is in its integrity but can be renovated. The historic district includes not only groups of buildings with 'Visible culture", but also "invisible culture" and spirit of place in it. A place is a space which has a distinct characters. To explain clearly . Christian Norberg-Schuitz has ever used "spirit of place" to describe the profound feature that is hard to grasp, such as Atmosphere and Mood and so on, It is just this characteristic thai makes place so attractive. When we learn about a historic district, it is necessary for us to grasp its physical setting, as well as its special spirit of place.A historic district usually lies in the center of a city. Because of its special geographical locality, the land in it is much more expensive. Nowadays, cities are short of land resource. Therefore, how we can explore a historic district without destroying it is a great problem to be discussed At present, there are two opposite problems about the conservation and renewal of the historie district On one hand, people lay too much emphasis on (he construction work., neglecting all these: the maintenance and contimnity of the spirit of place, the ways of people's living, the customs, and the people's conception of value On the other hand, some people pay too much attention to the personsal design or creation, ignoring two aspects the science and logic in the course of the design, and the importance of proper mechanism and process In order fro preserve and continue the spirit of place during the conservation and renewal of the histrict,some research has been done on place design processIf we want to conserve and renew a historic district, we can follow the place design process (from place analysis, place concept design, evaluate of place concept design, design guaidance of place, particular plan of place construction and use, to post occupancy evaluation), design a city properly, and study the system and environmental sight of the city from the forming of the space. In this way, we can incarnate the style and features of the city.And this is the main point of the research in this dissertation.
