At present, short distance and limited monitor channels are shortcomings of the existing telemetric ECG (Electrocardiograph) monitoring system, while the existing remote monitoring system has disadvantages of high cost and low data transfer rate. Furthermore, neither of these two systems can achieve real-time monitoring on the spot. An ECG central monitoring system based on embedded Linux, which successfully solves the problems of the former two systems, is introduced in this dissertation. This system, which adopts Client/Server model, is composed of portable ECG monitors and a central monitoring PC. The clients (embedded ECG monitor) not only can monitor patients immediately and independently on the spot, but also can be connected to the server (central monitoring PC) through Internet. The server then can monitor several patients intensively by receiving ECG data from the clients. By using embedded system technology, the client has the features of low cost, small volume, light weight, low power, high stability and so on. Sending the ECG data through Internet which is a uniform and open system all over the world, this system has the versatility so that it can act as an ideal substitute of the existing remote ECG monitor and be applied out of hospital for remote monitoring as well. This dissertation introduces the present study situation and further development of ECG monitoring system at home and abroad. Based on the theories of Internet communication, the total solution and the communication protocol of the system are discussed in details. According to the function requirements of the ECG central monitoring system, the total scheme of this system is designed. Through the study of embedded system, the dissertation expatiates the system structure and the hardware and software design of the client(embedded ECG monitor). By using multi-thread programming technique, Internet communicating technique, data sampling technique through serial port, MiniGUI programming technique and so on, the monitor software of the client is designed and implemented. By adopting multi-thread programming technique, Internet communicating technique and other techniques, the monitor software of the server is designed and realized. In the end, the system passes clinic experiments in hospital. It is proven that the system scheme is complete and the design of the hardware and software is right. This monitoring system has good dynamic response, real-time display and intelligence, which can reveal the current ECG of patient and analysis ECG data synchronously and exactly. The development of this ECG central monitoring system puts forward a new solution for medical instruments'implementing and networking, and achieves a success.
