Lane is a kind of characteristic space in Chinese traditional residential environments. The organization of city space has complied with the basic mode "street—lane—yard" in Chinese historical towns. However, with the development of social economy and the change of social construction, traditional dwelling style has been abandoned and various lanes have been being disappeared, which have been merged into the modern city construction tide. As a result, the research on the vlane not only recorded its history and taped its connotation, but also attempted to find its declining reason and how to come it down.Lane has grown and developed through two ways: natural forming and rational planning. And its space forming process has resulted from various elements interacted, inter-related and inter-affected. The form system of lane has consummated and the function has become more and more abundant during the course of development.Lane is a sort of transition from city public space to family private space, an important portion of city texture and venation of city life, therefore, it may be treated as capillary vessels transiting nutrition and energy to "the city body" . Meanwhile, it also conveys the human character and space character.Lane is humanistic space, whose scale, proportion and organization accord with people' s demands and full of the milk of human kindness. Its space form takes on free, abundant, various, and harmonious expression, with both uniform order and chances. This freedom contained in the certain order is always creating dramatic effects and possesses the special quality and human connotation that the modern city streets are short of. Lane shows us the fascination of life as well as brings the residents intensive sense of domain, sense of security, and sense of subornation.Whereas, the present status of lane is unforgivable, facing theserious existing threaten caused by some factors, such as the lacking of mending, city modern construction, high development of transportation, extreme increase of population, weakness of conservation consciousness, and new living style and cultural concepts, and so on. However, lane still has a good many problems in itself, including high fire hidden trouble, hard to suit the modern transportation, inadequate open space, eyesight disturbance, decay of function, all of which influences its development.Thus, it is possible that strengthen the protection and innovation to the lane and tap its connotation for more actual modern meanings. This thesis further discusses the possibility through analysis on many instances.
