With the rapid development of the electric power industry, the utilization of the continuously increased capacity of the generator units, the extraordinary large power grid, and the extra-high voltage transmission network etc., the operation and the management of power system is becoming more and more complex. The power system software, developed by the conventional technique, is unable to meet the requirements of the modern power systems in both the aspects of the quality as well as the efficiency. On the other hand, the modern software engineering provides us with a powerful tool to solve these problems. In the recent several decades, research of the software engineering has been coming into a new period in which management method and develop technique are integrated. New techniques and management methods are welling up, the object-oriented technique becomes a dominant technique, the unified modeling language (UML) outstands over the numerous object-oriented modeling techniques, investigation of the software reuse and the component technique becomes the hottest spot recently. This thesis, aimed at the investigation of the new requests and demands of software in power system operation and management, studies the utilization of the modern software engineering in power systems. Firstly, the background and the significant of the research is discussed, modern software engineering and its development is also outlined, and the present states and the reason of using the modern software engineering in power systems are also analyzed. Secondly, related theories and methods of the modern software engineering are systematically given in details, which establish the basis of the software development with the software engineering in power systems. Thirdly, the necessity of the developed power system software with the software engineering is analyzed deeply and the key techniques in carrying out the software development with the software engineering are discussed. Based on these, a concrete approach about the software development with the software engineering is proposed. And then, the software design process of 'GPS synchronous monitoring system of Hunan power grid'is given to demonstrate the utilization of the approach proposed. Subsequently, quality and efficiency of the software is analyzed, which indicates the validity of the method used. At last, the main work and fruitage of the thesis is concluded, and the further research is also pointed out.
