Campuses built in the 21st century present a great unlikeness in comparison with the 19th century. Generally, following a long period adjustment and readjustment, objects could reach a relative stable level. So do the campuses. "Applicability", the character of campuses which is same to the cities at the middle age, has been come into being in the progress of usage instead of programming, which results in a balance state both on the spatial and human scale. Moreover, it is testifies that the space gradually created through the usage presents better oneness but less complexity and adaptability than through the systematic programming.More or less differences could always be found between every campus. In China, undergoing a century-long development and extreme large amount of construction, which state do these campuses take on? What are the existing differences? To answer these questions, we have discovered that the state of campus chiefly lies on either match or difference among these building grouping since they are in existence with building grouping. Additionally, the feature of grouping could be most intuitively reflected by the outdoor space in campus, which is a decisive and representative element in campuses. Hereby, we intent to make analysis and studies on the theme of the difference in campuses and their causes by means of surveying the main outdoor space in most representative campuses in China and inquiring the basic usage status in domestic campuses.
