The appearances of Beijing old city have changed greatly as the result of the construction of contemporary urban development. Hutongs, as a typical representative of Beijing city space, are particularly reflecting this development process. From 1949, the founding of new China till the early 1990 s, Hutongs in Beijing old city have maintained the traditional historical style and features. As a large number of land redevelopment has been taking place here, a lot of Hutongs disappeared, merged, and transformed, along with a large number of Hutong place names that contain a deep history and culture disappeared as historical place names. However, there are some streets still maintain their original Hutongs place names after a series of space changes. This is a unique phenomenon of urban and culture. This paper, combining the science of toponymy and architecture, has finished the research about the reasons for the formation of this phenomenon and the inherent disciplines.Through researching the maps of Beijing of different periods and lots of literature reading, this paper selects 229 existing Hutongs whose spaces has totally changed and names remains as former. The research objects have been divided into three categories, the main artery, the branch and the park road. Then the process of their formation, change of their place names are described and the characteristics of their regeneration are analyzed. And on this basis, the connection and the relationship between the spatial entity and the place name are summarized.
