In the process of urbanization, the development of urban traffic network suffers lots of restrictions brought by the limits of lands and resources, the protection of environment, the efficiency and upkeep of transportation system, the insurance of public safety and some other requirements. According to the problems above, public traffic system is considered to be the best form of the urban transportation, especially in those trunk roadways in cities, with some obvious benefits such as larger carrying capacity, comparatively lower operation cost, greater transport efficiency, and less environment pollution. Therefore a world wide realization come forth nowadays that the public traffic system need to be offered the highest development priority. In construction and application of public traffic network, its distribution mainly determines the general quality and efficiency of the total system, and hence the optimization design of this distribution, which decides the numbers and routes of public traffic vehicles, based on overall population, road status and traffic devices, is a significant part in its development. Recently, simulation software takes place to analyze and estimate those optimization designs, while Geographic Information System (GIS) helps to support the spatial geographic information, just like directions of roadways and distributions of population. Thus an optimization design model of public traffic network distribution for simulation software based on the supports of GIS is presented in this paperThis paper accomplishes thereinafter contents:(1) The content of public traffic network design, traffic simulation system and Geographical Information System is introduced and the internal relationshipbetween them is analyzed in this paper.(2) According to a design algorithm of traffic network distribution developed by Prof. Wang Wei, a mathematic model of bus routing problem, which takes the maximum sum of dynamic nonstop passengers as optimization object with bending modulus restriction, is established and the solution algorithm based on ant colony algorithm is developed. Besides, a mathematic model of public traffic network design which based on the former bus routing model is developed, while the feasibility and efficiency of this model is verified by being applied to a sample system.(3) The analysis of the application of GIS in traffic simulation is presented, and a display module of traffic simulation system is developed after a total test of the dynamic display functions of embedded MapObjects tool. The public traffic design with GIS is generally completed. At last, the completed works in this paper are summarized and the possible continuing research is prospected.
