With the rapid development of the ship industry and the shipbuilding technology, modern ship has been accoutered with kinds of automation equipments. Consequently, manipulators have to constantly improve their expertise and skills to get rid of failure quickly and avoid making mistakes during the journey. To fulfill the requirement of the skill training, many kinds of simulation training systems have been gained high recognition by international community. It has been widely used when training seamen. In the traditional simulation training system, the navigation and the marine engine are separated. In this way, the system may be precision, but is lack of integration. It is necessary to build a dual-purpose navigation training system. The visual simulation combining the image manipulation and the distributed manipulation technology is very important in Virtual Reality technology. By using this technology, the training simulator can show a real visual world, highly improve the efficiency and quality of training.This paper presents the function and design of the dual-purpose navigation training system for visual. It summarizes how to develop a visual simulation system by Creator & Vega, how to accomplish the basic function of a visual simulation system in the windows 2000.The research work includes several parts as follows:1) Designed the framework of the dual-purpose navigation training system.2) Built the virtual scene model by Creator, and optimized the model to enhance the capability of the system.3) Fulfilled the system by using the VR development software named Vega.4) Established the mathematical model of dynamic ship to enhance the system's precision.5) Completed the communication between Visual Simulation System and Full Mission Marine Engine Room Simulator.
