With the development of high-speed railway, research on high speed turnout has been paid more and more attention, because it is the weakest part of track structure and affects the speed of train directly; and the curve is also been noticed, due to that it determines the safety of trains going pass curves. At the same time, virtual reality technology is increasingly maturing, its application has been extended to training of all walks of life from a single field of military aviation, and it has been applied and developed in different fields as well, such as industrial design, medical, education. It is the high-tech that was brought to the study of wheel rail system, and created a visual simulation system that to simulate the hunting motion when a rolling stock (single wheelset) went through the turnout and curve, so that the operation status could be more intuitively and accurately observed and more conveniently detected. The virtual simulation system could make the railway researchers quickly get the safe and economic design scheme; therefore it plays an important role in the research and study on dynamics of wheel/rail system.In this paper, hunting of rolling stock (single wheelset) going through turnout and its curving performance were the research focus, and a visual simulation application was created according to study on knowledge of wheel/rail system dynamics; thus, that more directly expressed these dynamic phenomenon, hunting and curve passing. In addition, the application of virtual visualization technology in the study of wheel rail system was discussed thoroughly.The main reaching content of this paper can be summarized as follows:1. According to consult literature material, learning the knowledge on wheel/rail system dynamics, which is focused on hunting of rolling stock (single wheelset) going through a turnout and its performance to pass the curve, so that, to understand dynamic analysis of the movement of wheel/rail system.2. Deeply studying methods and steps to realize a virtual simulation system based on the understanding of the application of virtual reality technology, thus to develop a set of overall scheme for implementing simulation of wheel/rail movement; so that, the first-phase preparations can be done well to create the virtual simulation system; where in the aspect of modeling, balancing the real-time and the realistic of system to a maximum extent based on a variety of Creator’s optimization techniques.3. Based on VC++, establishing a initial framework of virtual system with the powerful Lynx Prime interface of Vega Prime software to make the workload of programming be greatly reduced; then creating a human-computer-interaction interface to realize the virtual simulation of wheel/rail movement with the combination of Visual Studio programming and VP library; in which, reasonably setting up some friendly menus; moreover, creating a small real-time window to display information by the OpenGL; what’s more, setting a shortcut key to achieve wheelset’s rotation.Through the exploration of virtual simulation for wheel/rail movement in some many ways, a set of comprehensive application system was developed, that was able to reproduce operating status of the rolling stock (single wheelset) passing through turnout and curve, and to simulate behavior of the rolling stock (single wheelset) when it passes through turnout in different ways and at different paces as well as curve, and some parameters associated with the movement were quantified to make it more intuitive. The system had using value. In the design and evaluation of railway, the system could assist the researchers to obtain test data earlier, thus reducing the risk during the test, and making the research more economical and more efficient; in addition, in the aspect of teaching, the system could greatly help students understand the knowledge on the hunting and curving performance of railway vehicles (single wheelset).
